How to look like a serious walker

April 22, 2008

The better weather we’ve at last been enjoying over the past few days has meant that I’ve finally been able to do my first serious walking of the Spring.  A group of us stayed in Herefordshire over the weekend and made the most of the delightful countryside as we trekked through it.

Although I’m a keen walker I often don’t use a hiking stick and didn’t take one this weekend.  Some in the group did, however, and it was interesting to see how much more seriously they were taken as walkers.

In the company of someone with a hiking stick or trekking pole, it’s immediately assumed you’re undertaking a long walk or you’re going over some difficult terrain – even if you’re just popping out for the newspaper!

I have to confess to a special interest in this because we sell hiking sticks from our website.  I therefore know from what I’ve learned at Somerwood that they are not exclusively for serious walkers, and anyone can benefit from the stability they provide.

But it’s all a matter of perception.

Back in fashion: hand-carved walking sticks

April 17, 2008

We’re delighted to note that this Spring has seen a big resurgence of interest in fine, hand-carved walking sticks.  Once seen as a collector’s item, they are now becoming much more popular as everyday walking sticks.

We’ve noticed this trend because we offer a wide range of walking sticks from our website, and it’s very noticeable that sales of carved sticks have recently increased dramatically.

Many different types of carved walking sticks are available from different retailers.  The supplier we use for our website is based in Turkey and uses Cornelian Cherry Wood.

Let us hope that this trend continues, and that traditional, carefully carved walking sticks once again become the fashion accessories they deserve to be.

New walking sticks in Spring

April 8, 2008

We are amazed by the current weather.  First it snowed on Easter Sunday, and now the snow has been settling in April.

We thought at first this would be bad news for our business.  At the Somerwood website we specialise in walking sticks, including hiking sticks and trekking poles designed for more serious walkers.  Spring is a time of year when a lot of people think about taking long walks in the country, and sales of hiking sticks rise as a result.

What we’ve found this year however is that, as the cold weather has continued, our sales of ordinary walking sticks have increased.  We‘re not exactly sure why.  It may be that, as the evenings draw out, many people still want to get out more and need the reassurance they get from having a new walking stick.

Still, I think we’d sooner settle for some better weather!

Waking out in the light evenings

April 1, 2008

At long last we’ve put the clocks forward in the UK and British Summertime has begun.  It really is fantastic to be able to enjoy lighter evenings once again.

Apart from anything else, it opens up so much extra time for outdoor activities after work.  I’m not thinking about anything too strenuous – just walking, for instance. It’s not much fun in the dark, but it is a very pleasant way to spend a long Spring or Summer evening.

We always get to know when people’s interest in walking is rekindled.  We sell hiking sticks and trekking poles from our website, and sales take off around this time of year.

So I think I know how we’ll be spending some of our lighter evenings: working longer hours to despatch more hiking sticks from the website!  Still, even working is better when you do it in the light.
